Los satélites están ayudando a los científicos a expandir una red virtual que registra los aumentos en las temperaturas oceánicas capaces de dañar o destruir los frágiles ecosistemas coralinos en el mundo.
La Administración Nacional de los Océanos y la Atmósfera (NOAA, por sus siglas en inglés) dijo el jueves que su red Coral Reef Watch se ha expandido de 24 a 190 lugares, incluyendo los cayos de la Florida, el Caribe, el Golfo de México, los océanos Indico y Pacífico, Indonesia, Australia y Hawai.
La agencia usa instrumentos acuáticos para registrar las temperaturas oceánicas en una docena de arrecifes. El sistema expandido emplea satélites para controlar a control remoto las temperaturas del agua y otros factores sin el elevado costo de instalar artefactos.
Un mero aumento de dos grados Fahrenheit (ligeramente más de un grado centígrado) en la temperatura típica de verano puede afectar a los corales, haciendo que las diminutas criaturas marinas que forman los arrecifes expulsen las algas que viven en sus tejidos. Este fenómeno, conocido como decoloración, altera la naturaleza simbiótica del ecosistema y pone al descubierto sus esqueletos blancos.
