La Defensa Civil informó hoy que la noche de ayer el volcán Tungurahua, de 5 016 metros, ubicado a unos 200 kilómetros de Quito, expulsó piedras incandescentes y lava, causando alarma en las poblaciones campesinas aledañas.
Los bomberos y la Defensa Civil se movilizaron ante la eventualidad para realizar operativos de evacuación de la zona que no fueron necesarios finalmente.
Alrededor del volcán habitan unas 300 familias y la población más cercana es Palitahua, una aldea rural.
El informe del Instituto Geofísico de Ecuador señala que desde hace tres días la actividad sísmica del volcán se incrementó y cayó ceniza.
El volcán registró una fuerte erupción el 14 de julio y el 16 de agosto del año pasado, mientras el proceso eruptivo actual inició hace nueve años y es monitoreado constantemente por el Instituto Geofísico.
