El Dimebon (nombre científico: latrepirdina) no ha demostrado su eficacia en el tratamiento de pacientes con formas leves a moderadas de la enfermedad, cuando se administra en combinación con un tratamiento existente, el Aricept (nombre científico: donepezil), dijo Pzifer en un comunicado.
El tratamiento había sido desarrollado en asociación con la empresa de biotecnología Medivation, con sede en California.
Pfizer y Medivation anunciaron que suspenderán el desarrollo de Dimebon en todas sus indicaciones. Las dos compañías también terminaron su asociación para desarrollar y distribuir esta molécula.
A pesar de este contratiempo, Pfizer aseguró que continuará invirtiendo en la investigación contra el Alzheimer.
