Tras un experimento con ratones, el equipo dirigido por Michael Schwartz, de la Universidad de Washington, observaron que se perdían neuronas, concretamente las que se cree que protegen al organismo del aumento de peso.
Según Schwartz, las lesiones sufridas por culpa de la obesidad no significan daño cognitivo; es decir afecta al control de nuestro peso pero no a las funciones superiores del cerebro.
“Ese es el problema más grande con el tratamiento de la obesidad. Las personas obesas pueden perder peso, pero tienen problemas para mantenerse así”, dijo Schwartz.
Por otro lado, un segundo equipo de investigadores del Centro Médico Beth Israel Deaconess (EE.UU.) ha determinado que el volumen de las células nerviosas del hipotálamo es inhibida por la obesidad.
