Pen Hadow y otros dos exploradores británicos partirán en febrero del próximo año en una expedición de cuatro meses en los que recorrerán 1 200 kilómetros por el Polo Norte. La intención es tomar muestras del hielo, la nieve y el aire que se registran en el lugar.
Hadow y su equipo perforarán manualmente en el hielo ártico para tomar muestras y, de esta forma, actualizar los datos existentes hasta la fecha sobre el estado de esa capa de hielo polar.
“La única forma de llevar a cabo una auténtica medición de la nieve y del hielo es hacerlo en la superficie glacial o perforándola”, declaró Hadow a la AFP.
El equipo de este científico -que es el primer explorador en haber ido desde Canadá al Polo Norte, en solitario y sin ningún tipo de ayuda- enviará los datos que obtenga vía satélite, desde un ordenador portátil especialmente diseñado para la misión.
La expedición tiene como objetivo colmar el vacío que existe en las mediciones por satélites y submarinos, que no diferencian entre capas de hielo y nieve.
Las conclusiones del estudio se presentarán en la conferencia sobre el cambio climático de la ONU, que se desarrollará en el 2009 en Copenhague.
