Los glaciares en Nueva Zelanda han sufrido una pérdida considerable de masa y muchos de ellos continúan derritiéndose en forma rápida, advirtió hoy el Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones sobre Agua y Atmósfera en Wellington.
Los glaciares de los Alpes Sur han perdido 2,5 kilómetros cúbicos (2.200 millones de toneladas) de hielo permanente desde abril de 2007 a marzo de 2008.
El volumen total de hielo estimado para estos glaciares en 2008 es de 44,9 kilómetros cúbicos, la menor masa registrada hasta el momento desde que comenzaron a ser monitoreados.
Este instituto científico ha relevado la situación de 50 glaciares en la zona durante los últimos 32 años.
