Pensar en glaciares es hacerlo habitualmente en lugares como la Antártida o Groenlandia, pero en la Península Ibérica también se pueden encontrar estas formaciones de hielo. Aunque tal vez no por mucho tiempo, ya que una investigación española advierte de que sólo en los Pirineos pueden ser encontrados y que además, éstos desaparecerán antes de 2050 por culpa del aumento progresivo de la temperatura (0,9º desde 1890 hasta la fecha de hoy).
En el trabajo, que ha sido publicado en la revista "The Holocene", han participado científicos de la Universidad de Cantabria, de la Autónoma de Madrid y de Valladolid. Su labor ha consistido en realizar una síntesis del estado actual de los glaciares en Pirineos, Picos de Europa y Sierra Nevada, y para ello han observado la evolución climática desde la Pequeña Edad de Hielo (del año 1300 a 1860) hasta el periodo actual .
Los autores recabaron datos acerca del glaciarismo actual e histórico junto con información obtenida gracias al Programa Nacional ERHIN (Estudio de Recursos Hídricos y Nivales) de las tres áres aglaciadas en la Península Ibérica.
El investigador jefe del estudio y profesor en la Universidad de Cantabria, Juan José González Trueba, alerta de que "las altas montañas son espacios especialmente sensibles a los cambios climáticos y ambientales, y dentro de ellas, la evolución de los glaciares es uno de los indicadores más eficientes que evidencia el calentamiento global que estamos viviendo".
