Las piedras fueron descubiertas en la población de Miaofengshan, ubicada en el distrito de Mentougou, unos 100 kilómetros al oeste del centro de la capital china
"Deben haber sido las gravillas flotantes del Período Cuaternario," dijo Wang Hongjie, descubridor de las rocas, y quien es ingeniero del Equipo de Hidrología y Geología del Municipio de Beijing.
Wang afirmó que es la primera vez que se ha descubierto una distribución tan densa de reliquias glaciales bien conservadas en el norte del país. "A nivel mundial, este descubrimiento es poco común," añadió el especialista.
Los geólogos locales creen que el descubrimiento va a contribuir al estudio de la formación y deshielo de los glaciares, y su impacto en el clima local.
Según los expertos, antes de este último descubrimiento, sólo tres sitios de características similares habían sido hallados en Beijing, pero todos con concentraciones de reliquias muy esporádicas.
