La radiación difusa del cielo es el efecto generado cuando la radiación solar -wl conjunto de radiaciones electromagnéticas emitidas por el Sol-que alcanza la superficie de la atmósfera de la Tierra se dispersa de su dirección original a causa de moléculas en la atmósfera. Del total de luz removida por dispersión en la atmósfera (aproximadamente un 25% de la radiación incidente), cerca de dos tercios finalmente llegan a la tierra como radiación difusa.
La radiación solar se distribuye desde el infrarrojo hasta el ultravioleta. No toda la radiación alcanza la superficie de la Tierra, pues las ondas ultravioletas, más cortas, son absorbidas por los gases de la atmósfera fundamentalmente por el ozono.
